Chicago Blackhawks vs. Philadelphia Flyers

TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

The last time Chicago won in Philadelphia, Alex Zhamnov was in his first season with the team. The Blackhawks won’t have him around this time.

Zhamnov will make his first appearance against his former club since being traded last week as the Flyers try to keep the Blackhawks winless in Philadelphia since the 1996-97 season.

”They (the Blackhawks) are like family to me,” Zhamnov said. ”But I understand it’s a business. I play for Philly and I’m going to try to win. I don’t know what to expect. Right now I’m on the other side. I know I have to play hard and help this team win.”

The Flyers acquired Zhamnov on Thursday in a deal that sent center Colin Fraser and defenseman Jim Vandermeer to the Blackhawks. Philadelphia also received a fourth-round pick in the June draft, and Chicago got a second-round pick.

The trade fills a big need for the Flyers, with centers Jeremy Roenick (concussion, broken jaw) and Keith Primeau (concussion) sidelined.

Zhamnov played in his first game for Philadelphia on Saturday, going scoreless in a little less than 17 minutes as the Flyers ended a a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Atlanta on a successful penalty shot by Simon Gagne with 1:01 left in regulation.

Zhamnov, who had six goals and 12 assists in 23 games with lowly Chicago prior to the trade, said it felt good to finally play in a meaningful game.

In his 11 seasons, Zhamnov has been to the playoffs only three times, including just once (2001-02) in seven full years with the Blackhawks.

”I’m excited to be on a team contending for the Stanley Cup,” Zhamnov said. ”The last couple of months were tough. I knew I’d be traded. I just didn’t know where. I’m happy to be here.”

Zhamnov was a member of the last Chicago team to win in Philadelphia, 4-1 on Nov. 9, 1996. The Blackhawks have since lost five straight road games to the Flyers.

Chicago, however, has played well of late. The Blackhawks beat St. Louis 3-2 in overtime at home on Sunday for their fourth win in six games.

Kyle Calder tied it at 2-2 with 1:28 left in regulation, and Stephane Robidas gave Chicago the win with 19.5 seconds left in overtime.

Robidas, a low-scoring defenseman, has scored only one other goal this season. In 253 NHL games, he has 12 goals and 30 assists.

”I don’t get a lot of chances to play on the power play,” Robidas said. ”When you get a chance in a four-on-three late in the game, you want to go out there and prove to yourself and everyone you can do a job.”

Chicago is just 5-22-3-1 on the road this season, but has won two of its last three away from home.

PRAGUE — The Blackhawks began their 2020-20 looking much the same as they did in 2020-19: defensively loose, turnover prone and slow on their feet.

Numerous back-end breakdowns spoiled goals from Alex Nylander, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane as the Hawks dropped a 4-3 decision to the Flyers in the season opener Friday.

The Hawks were out-shot heavily, especially in the second period, as the Flyers adapted quicker to the poor ice quality at Prague’s O2 Arena. Kane pulled the Hawks within one with 2:07 left and the goalie pulled, but they were unable to find an equalizer.

Nylander’s beautiful snipe was his first goal on the team, and Corey Crawford made some acrobatic stops among his 33 saves. The Hawks will return home from Europe winless in the one game that mattered.

Highlights from the game:

Third period

Final score — Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3.

2:07: Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3 — Patrick Kane scores to make it a one-goal game. Hawks continue with the empty net.

2:51: Flyers 4, Blackhawks 2 — Blackhawks go with empty net.

10:12: Flyers 4, Blackhawks 2 — Michael Raffi restores the Flyers’ two-goal lead. Tyler Pitlick and Robert Hagg are credited with the assists.

Attendance: 17,463. Sellout and arena record. It is a really good (and engaged) crowd.

Crawford has been really good for the Hawks tonight. This deficit is most certainly not his fault. Another unusual but impressive kick save just now.

Second period

12.3 seconds: Flyers 3, Blackhawks 2 — Alex DeBrincat scores to trim the Flyers’ lead. Patrick Kane and Erik Gustafsson are credited with assists.

1:57: Flyers 3, Blackhawks 1 — Travis Konecny scores his second goal to give the Flyers a two-goal lead.

2:11: Flyers 2, Blackhawks 1 — A 4-on-4 as the Flyers’ Claude Giroux goes to the box for slashing.

2:30: Flyers 2, Blackhawks 1 — The first brawl of the season as the players mix it up around the Hawks’ net. Andrew Shaw goes to the penalty box, giving the Flyers another power play.

13:32 Flyers 2, Blackhawks 1 — Oskar Lindblom’s unassisted goal on the power play puts the Flyers in front of the Blackhawks.

Rough period so far for the Blackhawks. Haven’t produced anything really offensively. Colliton sent out DeBrincat-Strome-Kane after a recent PK to try to switch things up.

Flyers take a 2-1 lead on the flukiest goal you’ll ever see. Puck ricocheted off the crossbar, then off Koekkoek’s face literally at the faceoff dot and into the net.

15:19: Blackhawks 1, Flyers 1 — Penalty by Duncan Keith gives the Flyers a power play.

First intermission

The Blackhawks have 11 shots on goal through the first period. The Flyers have 13.

Showtime gives @CRoumeliotis his thoughts on the first period.

End first: Blackhawks 1, Flyers 1. By my eye test, Flyers had more high-danger chances but the Hawks probably had more overall chances.

First period

12:16: Blackhawks 1, Flyers 1 — The Hawks tie the game with a goal by Alexander Nylander, his first as a Blackhawk. Patrick Kane is credited with the assist.

13:36: Flyers 1, Blackhawks 0 — Travis Konecny scores an unassisted goal to give the Flyers the lead.

16:44: Blackhawks 0, Flyers 0 — A hooking penalty by Jakub Voracek gives the Blackhawks the first power play.

Before the game

The NHL regular season is finally underway. Even if the teams had to travel to Europe to open play.

The Blackhawks play the Flyers in the first of this season’s NHL Global Series games. (The Sabres and Lightning will play two games in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9.)

The Blackhawks’ next game will be the home opener Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. against the Sharks.

After the Hawks again missed the playoffs last season, Sun-Times reporter Ben Pope examined five questions the team will face in 2020-20, and made his predictions for the upcoming season.

Philadelphia went 37-37-8 overall and 19-18-4 at home in the 2020-19 season. Goalies for the Flyers allowed 3.2 goals on 32.3 shots per game last season.

Chicago went 36-34-12 overall and 17-20-4 on the road during the 2020-19 season. The Blackhawks scored 267 total goals last season, 48 on power plays and six shorthanded.
